Frequently asked questions

Questions need answers and we have them! We’ve answered the tough questions, for you.

It’s freezing, the water pipes are exploding, and your furnace will not turn on. Could it get any worse? Maybe not, but we can make it better! If it’s an emergency, call us right away.

Get the answers from our experts. See our most Frequently Asked Questions below.

Heating

How cold will my home get while you are installing my furnace?

The house temperature usually falls 3 to 5 degrees while we install your new equipment.

How much mess is there going to be?

We install red carpets throughout your home. If we have to cut drywall, we clean up our mess and we do minimal damage to your home. Once we have completed your installation, your home is as clean or cleaner than when we started.

How noisy will my new equipment be?

Your new equipment will be quieter than your old equipment, 99% of the time.

How long does it take to install my new equipment?

Usually we can install your equipment in 8 hours or less. It depends on what equipment we are installing. If it is going to take longer than a day we will inform you before we start.
Cooling

What does the SEER rating mean?

SEER rating is very important in the air conditioning world. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. A higher SEER rating provides greater energy efficiency. The minimum standard SEER for air conditioners is 13, though most modern air conditioners have a SEER that ranges from 13 to 25. Generally, the higher the Seer rating the quieter the air conditioner.

Do you service R22 Refrigerant (Freon) air conditioners?

R22 Refrigerant (commonly known as Freon) is phasing out. Any air conditioners older than 10 years use R22. With R22 being phased out, any left in the industry will probably increase in price and this may raise the cost of a/c repairs. If your air conditioner runs on Freon, you should think about replacing it with a newer unit. At some point, R22 will not be available at all leaving you no choice.

Why should I get AtlasCare to check on my air conditioner?

Scheduling an AC tune-up is critical to keeping your hydro costs low. A dirty air conditioner uses more electricity. Have a professional AtlasCare service technician clean and inspect your air conditioner annually. Throughout the summer months, you will need to keep your AC unit clean by spraying it down in a certain way our technician can show you. It’s also important that plants and bushes are a minimum 2-3 feet clear of the unit so you’re AC has better airflow.

What does the MERV rating mean?

MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) has to do with furnace filters. Why is this important when it’s cooling season? Because your furnace is what helps circulate the air flow and cool air throughout your home and the filter traps particles. For optimal home comfort, adequate airflow is necessary to regulate temperature and keep allergens out. For most homes, a MERV rating between 8 and 11 is perfectly fine. A higher MERV rating captures more particles which is great for people who suffer with allergies and asthma. Keep in mind, the higher the MERV, the less airflow so having an AtlasCare expert diagnose what’s best for you and your home has great value to you and your family.

How often should I replace my filter?

Most filters should be replaced a minimum of every 2-3 months if it’s a 1” filter. Having a 5” filter is much better for keeping dust, allergens and other particles out. 5” filters should be changed every 6-12 months. A pleated filter is a better quality filter than a flat one. AtlasCare can change your 1” to 5”.

Does an air conditioner control humidity?

When your air conditioner is running properly, it controls the humidity in your home during the summer.

Why is cool air not reaching the top floor of my house?

Many people complain that the cool air isn’t reaching upstairs. We look at how to improve the comfort level on the top floor of the house. It could need air balancing or a simple fan adjustment. Contact us.

What's the benefit of a UV Light?

Adding a UV Light when you’re HVAC equipment is being serviced or replaced helps to kill bacteria and viruses.
Plumbing

What is your hourly rate?

We provide upfront pricing with labour and materials before any work is done. This provides peace of mind, as we let you know what the price will cost ahead of time! Our price will not change once the job has commenced.

If you need to cut into drywall do you repair it?

No, because it does not make sense to pay a plumber to fix drywall. You can save yourself money by hiring a drywaller! We are happy to provide referrals if required.

Can you fix my dishwasher or washing machine?

No, unfortunately we do not. We are happy to assist with the plumbing aspect of the machine, such as the water lines to the point it enters the appliance and the drainage it connects to.

Are your plumbers licensed?

Yes, our plumbers are licensed, bonded and insured.

If we go ahead with the quote, can you do the work the same day?

Yes, our plumbers arrive with a fully stocked truck. If there is something specific that is required, we have accounts set up at numerous vendors within the GTA to serve you quickly and efficiently.
Drains

How often should I clean my back water valve?

Your back water valve should be cleaned every six months by simply removing the cap and pouring boiling water over the valve and then flushing your toilets.

How do I know if my sump pump is working properly?

You can test the pump by lifting the floater up on the side of the pump. If the pump is activated then it’s working properly.

What does it mean if my toilets are bubbling?

Air pockets occur when there is a blockage in the vertical or horizontal line. The air comes from the vent on the roof.

How high should the water level be in my floor drain?

The water level in your floor drain should be roughly 6” down from the floor level.

What is this metal disk in my lawn?

Your “curb stop” or the the city’s shutoff valve to your homes water supply line.

How do I get rid of sewer flies?

Bio clean! We supply it, just give us a call.
Air Quality

How often should you clean your ducts?

Generally every 3-5 years or immediately after any home renovations. It is also recommended if you are moving into a new or re-sale home.

Can cleaning your ducts reduce money spent on energy bills?

Duct cleaning can reduce money spent on energy. With gas and electricity prices rising, dust in your ventilation system reduces its efficiency and drives energy bills up. By keeping your duct and furnace system regularly maintained and clean, you can save up to 15% on energy costs.

Why should I choose a NADCA member to have my air ducts cleaned?

NADCA members have signed a Code of Ethics stating they will do everything possible to protect the consumer. They follow ACR, the NADCA Standard, for cleaning to the best of their ability.
